When it comes to hygiene in particular, children who adopt good hygiene habits can cause a ripple effect on whole communities, simply by promoting that behaviour with their peers and families. These H for Handwashing CEOs have been trained and are equipped with educational materials to increase awareness of the importance of handwashing and good hygiene habits amongst their peers.
Handwashing practices are so vital they can actually reduce diarrheal diseases by 30% to 48% and acute respiratory infections by 20%. Yet in South Africa, research showed less than 43,6% of household’s members wash their hands with soap and running water after using the toilet, while 3,7% said that they did not wash their hands at all.*
The H for Handwashing CEOs will work alongside the Unilever National Schools Hygiene Programme and the Department of Education to reach thousands of learners, teaching them about the importance of using soap at critical occasions in an attempt to make this a daily habit.
Lifebuoy will also continue to work closely with each of the H for Handwashing CEOs to bring action and change in South African schools and communities.
